The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of The National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC) to determine eligibility of Indian nationals for Assistant Professorship, Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) or both, for Universities and Colleges situated in India. The Test is conducted twice a year in the months of June and December for 84 subjects in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Applications and Electronic Science. Eligible candidates can apply through Notification on official portal at https://ugcnet.nta.nic.in/
For Science subjects, namely, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Earth Atmospheric Ocean & Planetary Sciences, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the Joint CSIR-UGC NET through the National Testing Agency (NTA). Online applications are made available twice a year generally in the months of June and December on all India basis through Press Notification of Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF and LS/AP posted on https://csirnet.nta.nic.in/
Awarding of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/ or Eligibility for Assistant Professorship depends on the aggregate performance of the candidate in Paper-I and Paper-II of UGC-NET. The candidates qualifying only for Assistant Professorship are not to be considered for the awarding of JRF. Candidates who qualify the eligibility test for Assistant Professorship are governed by the rules and regulations for recruitment of Assistant Professor of the concerned universities/colleges/state governments, as the case may be.
